My name is Tom.
I’m a Systems Engineer at a company of around 3,000 in the Metro Detroit area. I’ve been working at the company for just over 5 years. I graduated from Central Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science where completed a double major in Computer Science and Information Technology. At CMU I was employed by the College of Business Technology Services, and before that I was at CompUSA for a year and some summers. Ok, enough background job stuff.
I particularly enjoy working on many Microsoft technologies. I’m experienced in installation/configuration/administration of TFS, Biztalk, SQL, IIS7, MSMQ, and probably a lot of other stuff I’m forgetting… I would consider my “specialty” to be web-hosting type platforms. IIS7, SQL Server, and .NET application are what I spend a majority of my time on, either related to internal application, or our public-facing websites. I also spend a lot of time using PowerShell for regular administration as well as for automating tasks (ask me about my killer FTP/SFTP PowerShell script). Recently I’ve been doing quite a bit of C# development. Two of my favorite projects are an automated site/application deployment tool for IIS that works cross-DMZ (PIISSDT – Programmatic IIS Site Deployment Tool), and a file transfer scheduler that uses MSMQ and WCF. The latter works across multiple servers and allows us to transfer files on the same domain/network as well as cross-domain/network via WCF web services.
Primarily, I’m a server engineer who supports our development teams and several of our production systems. Through needs that my team and company have, I also do some software development from time to time. It helps to keep me sane – or maybe it’s the server stuff that keeps me sane. hmmm…
For fun, I do a lot of gaming, as well as play around with my Windows 7-based Media Center. When time and money permit, I like to waste both on my Neon SRT-4.
